Japan has partnered with Fujitsu Ltd. to develop innovative artificial intelligence “agents” aimed at enhancing military decision-making for Self-Defense Forces commanders. Awarded a research contract by the Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA), Fujitsu will create AI systems capable of rapid decision-making, advanced information analysis, and reducing personnel burdens. These AI agents will be equipped with robust capabilities to perceive their environment, reason objectives, and execute strategic combat plans. The project outlines three key objectives: accelerating decision-making, bolstering information superiority, and promoting labor efficiency within the Self-Defense Forces. Fujitsu plans to collaborate with startups and entities new to the defense sector, with a research budget of approximately 100 million yen ($628,460). Partner company selections will conclude by late June, with research results expected by March 2028. This initiative emphasizes the integration of AI technology in defense strategies, marking a significant advancement in Japan’s military operations.
