Google recently launched Antigravity, a free AI-integrated development environment (IDE) powered by the top-ranking Gemini 3 Pro model. Unlike competitors such as Cursor or Windsurf, which rely on third-party AI models, Antigravity allows developers to manage AI agents that autonomously write and validate code. Early tests indicate that while Gemini 3 excels at complex tasks, it still requires some supervision. Built on a fork of Visual Studio Code, Antigravity leverages the open-source platform’s strengths but also contributes to fragmentation in the IDE space.
A standout feature of Antigravity is “Artifacts,” which document agent activities, allowing for easy monitoring without micromanaging. This capability provides developers with verifiable records of task execution. Though Antigravity is still in the refinement phase, it shows promise and could outpace existing tools if improvements are made swiftly. With its unique model ownership, Google aims to position Antigravity as a cornerstone of future software development.
