Gemini, ChatGPT, and Other AI Chatbots: A Homogenous Approach That Hinders Human Creativity

0
Gemini, ChatGPT and most other AI chatbots think alike, and it's bad for human creativity

Recent research published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence reveals that reliance on AI chatbots, like Gemini and GPT, may inadvertently stifle creativity. A study comparing over 20 AI models to human participants on creativity tests showed that while individual AI responses appear original, they often cluster around similar ideas, limiting creative diversity. Human responses, in contrast, demonstrated a broader range of concepts. This convergence of ideas arises from the models’ lack of personal experiences and contextual understanding, which constraints their output variety. Encouraging AI to be more imaginative provided only slight improvements, emphasizing that heavy reliance on AI can diminish unique thought processes. As these tools are widely used for brainstorming, the risk of homogenizing ideas grows over time. To combat this trend, consider AI as a catalyst for inspiration, using it to generate ideas but ensuring to expand upon them with your own creativity for richer outcomes.
