At the recent Samsung Galaxy S26 launch, Samsung and Google unveiled the Gemini-based Screen Automation feature. This innovative tool allows the AI to manage apps on the Galaxy S26, performing tasks like ordering food or hailing rides with user confirmation. Unlike the Doubao Phone Assistant, which controls apps by reading screen pixels, Gemini operates within a controlled Android virtual sandbox for security and permission safeguards. Currently, it supports only select apps like Lyft and GrubHub and limits usage for different user tiers.

Google’s approach aims to integrate AI more closely with the Android ecosystem, utilizing a new app capability interface (AppFunctions) that allows apps to declare functions for AI access. This hybrid solution aims to enhance efficiency while avoiding conflicts with existing apps. Ultimately, Google’s goal is to evolve Android into an intelligent system that coordinates app functions rather than merely executing automated actions, presenting a balanced approach amidst diverse AI integrations.
