Gemini for Home: The New Official Replacement for Google Assistant on Smart Devices

Gemini for Home is the official replacement for Google Assistant on smart devices

Google is launching Gemini for Home, set to replace Google Assistant and enhance smart home experiences. Starting this month, Gemini introduces a more conversational approach, reducing the need for rigid commands. Users still activate it with “Hey Google”, but Gemini understands context better, allowing for more natural interactions, such as turning off specific lights by mentioning relevant details. You can even string multiple requests into one sentence.

New features include Gemini Live chat for seamless conversations without wake words, and enhanced AI capabilities for smart cameras that provide meaningful notifications, enabling specific footage retrieval through natural language inquiries with “Ask Home.” The “Home Brief” feature summarizes hours of footage for easy updates. Gemini for Home supports devices released in the last decade, including Walmart’s new gear. Notably, premium features require a $10/month subscription, which also offers extra cloud storage. Sign up for early access via the Google Home app as updates roll out this October.
