A recent ScholarshipOwl survey reveals that nearly all Gen Z students—97%—rely on AI tools like ChatGPT for their academic tasks. Many students, over 20%, confess to using AI to draft college or scholarship essays prior to enrollment. About 31% utilize AI for essay writing, while 35% for homework answers, and a significant 66% for study help. This shift away from traditional studying and writing practices raises concerns about academic integrity. Critics argue that reliance on AI tools has led to diminished engagement and learning, as shown in an MIT study indicating reduced brain activity among AI users. Despite the backlash, many students boast about their innovative use of platforms like ChatGPT, Grammarly, and others to streamline their schoolwork, generating millions of views on social media. Experts suggest that educational institutions need to adapt, potentially phasing out traditional essay requirements for more engaging formats that better reflect students’ voices.
