GM plans to launch eyes-off driving, Google AI, other tech by 2028

At the WSJ’s Future of Everything event, General Motors (GM) CEO Mary Barra unveiled ambitious plans for new software initiatives, including a Google-powered in-vehicle AI assistant, set to roll out in 2026. The upcoming driver-assistance system will enable hands-free driving by 2028, marking a major shift toward autonomous vehicles. During the “GM Forward” event, executives emphasized transforming cars from mere transportation to intelligent assistants, bolstering their tech capabilities with a new centralized computing platform debuting in the Cadillac Escalade IQ. GM also plans to launch its own custom AI technology to enhance user experience and anticipates expanding its offerings in vehicle autonomy. In the energy sector, GM’s “Energy Home System” will provide leasing options for home batteries and charging systems from 2026, aiming to compete with Tesla. This commitment to innovation reflects GM’s ongoing revenue growth strategy, with anticipated software earnings reaching between $20 billion and $25 billion by 2030.
