Goodbye Assistant: Gemini Steps in to Lead Google Maps

Gemini navigation

Google is rolling out its Gemini AI in Google Maps, replacing Google Assistant’s traditional hands-free navigation. Initially, users will still rely on Assistant while the transition unfolds. Gemini enhances conversational abilities, allowing users to request complex information, like nearby vegan restaurants, and receive tailored suggestions rather than a simple list. Additionally, a Gemini-powered version of Lens will be integrated, enabling users to point their camera at landmarks to receive instant, specific answers about locations, menus, and more. This user experience is localized and distinct from the Lens feature in the Google app. Google emphasizes that Gemini’s recommendations are based on its extensive data from place listings and Street View, reducing the chance of inaccuracies. While AI-generated “hallucinations” are acknowledged, the Maps team believes Gemini will provide reliable suggestions, though it will not determine routes, ensuring users retain control over navigation.
