In December 2025, Google’s Gemini experienced a remarkable 28% month-over-month growth, achieving nearly 40% of ChatGPT’s web audience, which fell from 203 million to 158 million visitors—a 22% drop. Google AI CEO, Demis Hassabis, acknowledged the work ahead but emphasized their persistent progress in the competitive AI chatbot landscape. Launched in November 2025, Google’s Gemini 3.0 has forced OpenAI into a “Code Red” scenario, prompting CEO Sam Altman to redirect focus solely on ChatGPT amid declining traffic. From a market share high of 68% last December, ChatGPT’s share decreased to 64.5% by January 2026. Conversely, Gemini surged from 5.7% to a substantial 21.5% of the Generative AI market. Google’s superior infrastructure—including proprietary TPU v5 chips and deeper ecosystem integration—positions Gemini competitively, contrasting with OpenAI’s reliance on Microsoft Azure and Nvidia, indicative of underlying cost challenges.
