Google spokesperson Jenny Thomson labeled these reports as “misleading,” asserting that user settings remain unchanged and Gmail’s analysis is solely for improving in-app features.
The misunderstanding intensified when cybersecurity firm Malwarebytes suggested users were automatically opted-in to new settings, potentially using email content for AI training. However, Gmail’s scanning for smart features does not contribute to Gemini AI training, as confirmed by Google. Additionally, the update aimed to clarify personal data controls without changing data usage policies.
