Gemini, Google’s AI chatbot, has seen a 46% rise in traffic since August, attracting 1.1 billion visits in September, according to Similarweb. This spike in popularity comes as ChatGPT grapples with user backlash over its new safety measures, which can interrupt conversations. ChatGPT’s traffic share dropped from 78% to 73.8%, while Gemini surged from 9.1% to 13.7%. Despite this growth, ChatGPT retains the highest user loyalty—with 82.2% of its audience not visiting other GenAI sites, compared to Gemini’s 49.1%. Gemini is gaining traction but remains substantially behind ChatGPT, which dominated the GenAI market with 5.9 billion visits and ranked as the fifth-most popular website in September. The ongoing backlash against ChatGPT’s “nanny mode,” triggering safety responses in sensitive conversations, may inadvertently be boosting Gemini’s appeal. While Gemini celebrates its rising stats, ChatGPT remains the preferred choice for many users.
