Google Gemini is getting better at identifying AI fakes

Google is enhancing the Gemini app to help users identify AI-generated images. Starting today, users can simply ask Gemini, “Is this AI-generated?” to verify whether an image was created or altered by Google’s AI tools. While this feature currently focuses on images, Google plans to expand video and audio verification soon and integrate this functionality into Google Search. A significant future update will involve supporting industry-wide C2PA content credentials, allowing for the detection of content from various AI platforms, including OpenAI’s Sora. Initially, image verification relies on SynthID, Google’s invisible AI watermark. However, for C2PA credentials and watermarks like SynthID to be effective, social media platforms must improve their ability to automatically flag AI-generated content, alleviating the responsibility from users to verify content themselves. This advancement marks a notable step toward greater content transparency and authenticity online.
