Google has significantly updated its Gemini AI platform, introducing new mental health features focused on timely user support. The enhancements include improved crisis support, with the AI capable of detecting emotional distress signals during conversations. When distress is noted, users receive a “Help is available” prompt, and in severe cases, a quick option connects them to crisis helplines via call, chat, or text. To bolster mental health infrastructure, Google.org has pledged $30 million over three years to expand crisis helplines and enhance their response capabilities. Google is also partnering with ReflexAI, investing $4 million to improve training tools for sensitive conversations. Emphasizing user safety, the system avoids simulating human traits and is equipped with safeguards to prevent bullying and harassment. Importantly, Google insists that Gemini is a supportive tool, not a replacement for professional care, guiding users toward verified resources for their mental health needs.
