Google has launched Groundsource, an innovative AI-driven flash flood prediction tool powered by its Gemini technology. This platform analyzes over 2.6 million historical flood events gathered from decades of public reports across 150 countries. By leveraging Google Maps, it defines the geographic boundaries of these events, enhancing disaster preparedness and resilience. Groundsource enables urban flash flood predictions up to 24 hours in advance, providing essential data for 2 billion people via Google’s Flood Hub, which also includes riverine flood forecasts. Additionally, Google is collaborating with emergency response agencies to share this vital information. WhileGroundsource presents significant advancements, it has limitations, including identifying risks only within a 20-square-kilometer range and lacking integration with local radar data, which reduces its precision compared to the US National Weather Service. Nevertheless, this tool holds promise for predicting various natural disasters, especially in regions lacking sophisticated weather-tracking infrastructure.
