Google is enhancing Google Maps with updates driven by its Gemini AI system, aiming for a more intuitive and conversational experience for users. The new features include smarter voice interactions, allowing drivers to ask contextual questions like “Find a restaurant with vegetarian options on my route” and control navigation through voice commands.
Gemini AI improves real-time navigation by allowing users to report traffic issues, helping the app update routes and alert other drivers. Additionally, navigation has shifted to landmark-based directions, making prompts clearer and more relatable, like “Turn right after the Chow Mein Chinese restaurant.”
Google Maps will also provide proactive traffic alerts even when users are not actively navigating, warning of sudden delays or closures. These updates are currently rolling out to Android users in the U.S. and aim to enhance community-based reporting and user experience.
