Google Play issues new generative AI prohibitions for apps

Google has updated its Play Store guidelines to curb the rise of problematic generative AI apps, particularly those offering features like deepfake undressing tools and graphic content. The new policy mandates that developers implement safeguards against inappropriate materials, including any content exploiting children or misleading users. Apps involved in generating AI content through text, voice, or image prompts must also provide in-app reporting mechanisms and undergo rigorous testing of their AI models. Notably, the rules do not apply to apps that simply host AI-generated content or productivity tools. This policy follows Google’s previous efforts to reduce the ranking of synthetic porn results and the banning of ads linked to deepfake pornography, addressing rising complaints from victims of nonconsensual use of their images. The updated regulations align with a recent White House directive aimed at combating the misuse and dissemination of deepfake content, promoting safer online experiences.
