Google has decoupled its Live Translate feature from Pixel Buds, enabling real-time speech translation for any Bluetooth headphones on Android devices. This update employs the new Gemini 2.5 Flash Native Audio model, enhancing performance with lower latency. The rollout is currently happening in the US, Mexico, and India, but iOS support is not expected until 2026. This decision ends hardware exclusivity, challenging dedicated translator devices and apps like Duolingo, which Google is also competing against by expanding its “Practice” mode to 20 countries and introducing gamification features like Daily Streaks. The new Live Translate allows users to hear translated audio seamlessly, maintaining vocal characteristics for a natural experience. With over 70 languages supported, this technology shift emphasizes accessibility and aligns with Google’s broader strategy to enhance language tools across its ecosystem. Gamification in language learning signals a strategic push to attract casual users, further intensifying competition in the EdTech space.
