Google has introduced a groundbreaking AI-powered ecommerce suite in the U.S., allowing eligible shoppers to seamlessly browse and purchase products via the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). This initiative, developed alongside major retailers like Shopify and Etsy, aims to simplify online shopping by automating product research, purchasing, and post-purchase support. The new system, which enhances security through the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), facilitates communication among agents in a standardized “common language.” Available through the Gemini app and AI Mode in Google Search, the AI assistant retains shipping details in Google Wallet, streamlining the checkout process. In addition, Google plans a Business Agent tool for retailers to create virtual sales assistants, providing customer insights and promoting products. A pilot program called Direct Offers will feature exclusive deals for users of AI Mode. As competition heats up with rivals like OpenAI, Google is set for a global expansion of this innovative shopping experience.
