Google is enhancing its travel offerings by developing an AI travel assistant capable of handling bookings autonomously. Currently focused on “agentic restaurant bookings” and local services, the next phase includes flights and hotels. With the rollout of its “AI Mode” across the U.S., users can describe preferences like dates and budgets, allowing the AI to compare options, display images, reviews, and finalize bookings with travel partners.
Google has secured partnerships with major players such as Booking.com and Expedia. This positions it in competition with OpenAI, which has integrated travel features into ChatGPT, allowing real-time hotel options and booking redirection.
While neither platform processes payments directly yet, the trend towards AI-driven travel bookings is undeniable. In the next 12-18 months, conversational AI is set to transform travel planning, prioritizing quick, reliable, and user-friendly experiences. As Google and OpenAI innovate, the travel industry is poised for significant change.
