Google decides to bring Gmail into 'the Gemini era' • The Register

Google is enhancing Gmail by integrating AI features as it enters the “Gemini era.” Key updates include automatic AI Overviews that summarize email threads, Help Me Write for drafting emails, and contextually relevant Suggested Replies. While these features will be available by default, users have the option to disable them. However, opting out means losing Gmail’s Smart Features, like inbox sorting.

Natural language search will primarily benefit Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, leaving free users without this tool. Privacy concerns are addressed as Google assures users that personal emails won’t train AI models, with all processing conducted securely.

Gmail users should be aware that while the features aim to streamline communication, there are potential pitfalls in AI-generated responses. This rollout starts with English-speaking users in the U.S. In light of these changes, users may consider alternative email platforms like Thunderbird to avoid extensive AI integration.
