In a first, Google has released data on how much energy an AI prompt uses

A recent report from Google highlights the varying energy consumption of Gemini prompts, noting that certain tasks, like generating detailed book synopses, can demand significantly more energy. While the report focuses solely on text prompts, it indicates that image and video generation typically requires even higher energy levels. Notably, energy usage for median Gemini queries has decreased drastically, from 33 times more in May 2024 to 2025, due to advancements in software and model optimizations. For environmental impact, Google calculated greenhouse gas emissions for median prompts at 0.03 grams of CO2, using a market-based approach that considers their clean energy purchases. Since 2010, the company has committed to over 22 gigawatts from renewable sources, reducing emissions significantly. Additionally, each AI prompt is estimated to consume approximately 0.26 milliliters of water for cooling. This report aims to enhance user awareness regarding the energy implications of AI interactions.
