Google has launched WeatherNext 2, an advanced AI-powered weather forecasting model that enhances accuracy across 99.9% of variables compared to its predecessor. This new model generates forecasts eight times faster, significantly improving services like Google Search and the Pixel Weather app. Utilizing a Functional Generative Network (FGN), WeatherNext 2 delivers realistic predictions while optimizing existing Google weather data. It generates four six-hour forecasts daily with up to a 15-day lead time. The FGN replaces the previous Graph Neural Network, ensuring that outputs remain physically interconnected and realistic. WeatherNext 2’s forecasts are completed in under a minute using TPU technology, benefiting developers and researchers through platforms like Earth Engine, BigQuery, and Vertex AI. This revolutionary model marks a significant step forward in weather forecasting, further enhancing user experiences across Google’s ecosystem, including Search and Google Maps Weather API.
