Google has strategically onboarded Indian-origin entrepreneur Varun Mohan, CEO and co-founder of AI coding startup Windsurf, to enhance its AI capabilities via the Gemini platform. Announced by Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, this transition will also include other Windsurf engineers. This partnership is part of a substantial $2.4 billion licensing agreement, allowing Google to access Windsurf’s IP without taking an equity stake, while the startup retains independence to license its technologies elsewhere. Windsurf is noted for its innovative “vibe coding” approach, enhancing AI-assisted software development into a collaborative experience. Mohan and his team are expected to contribute to “agentic coding,” a new concept designed to enable AI models to function as intelligent co-developers. The move marks a significant shift in the competitive AI landscape, where companies like OpenAI and Microsoft are also vying for dominance in developer tools. Windsurf’s ongoing development plans will proceed concurrently.
