Google (GOOG) has removed its open-source AI model, Gemma, from its public AI Studio after U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn raised concerns about the model generating false allegations of sexual assault against her. Blackburn accused Gemma of producing fabricated claims and misleading links related to rape accusations. In a letter addressed to CEO Sundar Pichai, she emphasized the dangers of AI-generated defamation and highlighted the ethical concerns tied to political bias. Google acknowledged that smaller models like Gemma carry risks of “hallucination” and were not intended for factual queries, noting misuse by non-developers. While Gemma is still accessible via Google’s API for research and development purposes, its removal from AI Studio reflects the company’s commitment to enhancing accuracy and mitigating potential misuse.
