Google’s Gemini App Achieves 450 Million Monthly Active Users in India Amid AI Expansion

Google’s Gemini app has surpassed 450 million monthly active users (MAU), with daily usage increasing by over 50% from the previous quarter, according to Shekar Khosla, Google India’s VP of Marketing. This surge follows the recent announcement that Indian students aged 18 and above can access the premium AI Pro subscription for free until September 15, 2025. The subscription includes cutting-edge AI models like Gemini 2.5 Pro and AI tools like Veo 3 and Flow. Competing directly with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which has around 600 million MAUs, Gemini is rapidly gaining traction. While it attracts users from ChatGPT, the latter remains a significant threat to Google’s core search business. Meanwhile, the AI landscape continues to evolve with Perplexity, a notable contender that recently topped the Apple App Store in India after offering free Pro subscriptions to Bharti Airtel customers. Google’s initiatives aim to strengthen the Indian developer ecosystem, enhancing its competitive edge in AI technology.
