Google's Home app, a command center for the smart home, gets a Gemini upgrade

Google has acknowledged that its Google Home app has previously fallen short in user experience and is now set to enhance it significantly. The redesigned app, launching alongside new Nest devices and a smart speaker, aims to streamline device management and integrate the Gemini AI assistant. Key improvements include a 70% faster startup time, 80% fewer crashes, and enhanced battery and memory performance, making it compatible with over 800 million devices from various manufacturers.

The app features simplified navigation with three tabs: Home, Activity, and Automation, along with a new AI-powered “Home Brief” feature that summarizes daily activities. Users can employ natural language queries with Gemini to manage devices and access camera footage. Additional updates include improved camera functionalities and a revamped Automation tab. The Google Home 4.0 update will be gradually rolling out from October 1, with early access available for those adjusting settings in the app.
