The Australian Federal Government is taking action against harmful artificial intelligence tools that generate sexually explicit content of children. Communications Minister Anika Wells acknowledged the challenge of eradicating abusive technology but emphasized the need to collaborate with the industry to limit access to “nudify” and undetectable stalking apps. These technologies, which can misuse images to create deepfake content, pose significant risks to children and adults. School staff are urged to report instances of AI-generated intimate images, and the eSafety Commissioner has released guidelines to address such incidents. Proposed laws could criminally penalize possession of nudifying apps, with penalties of up to 15 years in prison. The Government is also working on a social media ban for users under 16 to further protect youth. While complete elimination of abusive tech is unlikely, proactive measures and existing laws aim to mitigate risks and safeguard Australians from potential harm.
