AI-based diagnostic tools boosting TB, diabetes care: Govt

The Indian government is utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance public health services, particularly targeting tuberculosis (TB) and diabetes. Union Minister Prataprao Jadhav announced the establishment of AI Centers of Excellence at AIIMS Delhi, PGIMER Chandigarh, and AIIMS Rishikesh. AI solutions like the Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) and MadhuNetrAI (for Diabetic Retinopathy detection) have been developed to aid healthcare professionals in screening patients effectively. MadhuNetrAI has already screened over 14,000 images, benefiting 7,100 patients across 38 facilities in 11 states. The ‘Cough Against TB’ (CATB) initiative has employed AI to screen over 162,000 individuals, achieving a 12-16% increase in TB case reporting. Integrating CDSS into the eSanjeevani telemedicine platform has standardized consultations for 282 million users since April 2023. The government adheres to AI Governance Guidelines and other relevant policies to ensure operational reliability in healthcare services, streamlining diagnosis and improving patient outcomes.
