The Indian government has issued a stern warning to X Corp (formerly Twitter) over the misuse of AI tools like Grok to disseminate obscene content. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) criticized X for failing to comply with Indian IT laws, including the Information Technology Act, 2000, and relevant guidelines. In a letter dated January 2, 2026, MeitY demanded an Action Taken Report, emphasizing that violations impact the dignity and safety of women and children. The ministry highlighted rising concerns over complaints regarding explicit content and the ineffective platform safeguards against such misuse. Legal consequences could follow if X does not rectify compliance issues. MeitY reiterated that AI does not absolve companies of responsibility, insisting on heightened scrutiny to prevent the spread of illegal or harmful content. Immediate correction and adherence to digital safety laws are imperative, with severe penalties looming for failure to comply.
