Govt rolls out AI-based app Adi Vaani to translate, preserve tribal languages

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs has launched the beta version of ‘Adi Vaani’, an innovative AI-based translation tool designed to facilitate communication in tribal languages. Developed by a consortium led by IIT-Delhi, this app translates Hindi and English to various tribal languages, aiding in both preservation and digitization efforts. Given that India has a rich tapestry of 461 tribal languages, many are at risk of extinction; 82 are classified as vulnerable and 42 critically endangered. Initially, the app supports translations for widely spoken languages such as Bhili, Gondi, Santali, and Mundari. Collaboration with over 250 native speakers and community leaders helped create a comprehensive corpus for the model. With integrated language primers for foundational education, ‘Adi Vaani’ aims to enhance governmental outreach, improve access to educational resources, and empower tribal communities, aligning with initiatives like the Adi Karmayogi Abhiyan for grassroots leadership development. Expect the app on the Google Play Store by Friday.
