The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued a stern notice to social media platform X regarding significant lapses in compliance with the IT Act and IT Rules. The ministry expressed serious concerns over the misuse of X’s AI tool, Grok, which has been exploited to create and distribute sexually explicit content targeting women and children. This action, deemed a violation of dignity and digital safety, has prompted MeitY to demand an immediate review of Grok’s governance framework and the removal of unlawful content. Additionally, X is required to take action against offending users and submit an Action Taken Report within 72 hours. Non-compliance may lead to severe legal repercussions. Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi also called for enhanced safeguards for women’s safety on social media platforms. The government emphasizes the urgent need for accountability from tech firms to protect user privacy and dignity against AI misuse.
