The Indian government is harnessing Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance agricultural productivity and farmer livelihoods, addressing critical sector challenges. A recent AI pilot project involved local monsoon onset forecasts across 13 states for Kharif 2025, utilizing a sophisticated blended model, including NeuralGCM and ECMWF’s AI Forecasting System. This initiative provided probabilistic forecasts essential for crop sowing decisions, reaching over 38 million farmers through the M-Kisan portal in multiple regional languages. Feedback indicated that 31-52% of farmers adjusted their planting strategies post-forecast. Additionally, the ‘Kisan e-Mitra’ AI chatbot assists farmers with queries related to various government schemes, supporting 11 languages and resolving over 93 lakh inquiries. Moreover, the National Pest Surveillance System employs AI and Machine Learning to detect pest infestations, empowering over 10,000 extension workers and safeguarding crops from pests. These innovations signify a progressive shift towards technology-driven agriculture in India, ensuring sustainable farming practices and improved yields.
