Northeastern University graduate Sai Panindra Santosh Kumar Majji developed HEKA, a generative AI assistant for Massachusetts’ highway engineers, in partnership with MassDOT. This initiative aims to address challenges posed by workforce retirements and extensive documentation in engineering roles. HEKA, named after the Egyptian god of knowledge, assists engineers in navigating numerous documents related to various divisions like construction and safety. Majji’s prototype, initially a part of his co-op in the AI for Impact program, was refined through feedback from MassDOT engineers and culminated in impactful presentations, including to Governor Maura Healey. Launched in November, HEKA increased engineers’ efficiency by 78%, streamlining document searches and requirement queries. This experience transformed Majji’s career, shifting his focus toward “Gov-tech,” emphasizing the significant role technology can play in public service. HEKA represents a significant advancement in utilizing AI to improve government operations and project management in infrastructure development.
