New AI tool developed by Bengaluru startup tracks ships, aircraft even with GPS off

In response to rising concerns over smuggling, illegal fishing, and “dark shipping,” Bengaluru-based start-up Xovian Aerospace has developed an innovative tool to track ships and aircraft without GPS. Utilizing artificial intelligence and radio frequency signals, this tracking system monitors vehicles that go off conventional radar. Co-founder Ankit Bhateja revealed that ongoing pilot projects with commercial shipping companies and discussions with the Indian defense sector are underway. The 14-member team, which includes former ISRO scientists, spent two years perfecting this technology. Unlike traditional tracking methods that depend on satellite imagery, Xovian’s system captures radio frequency emissions from onboard instruments. Even when GPS and Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) are disabled, the tool estimates movement through electromagnetic signals. Although current tracking has a 20-minute delay, once Xovian deploys its own RF payload satellite, tracking times are expected to improve significantly. They are currently in talks with ISRO and international launch providers for this initiative.
