Harnessing AI: A Game Changer for Biodiversity Conservation

0
AI emerging as a powerful tool in conservation of biodiversity

On June 29, as we observed the International Day of the Tropics, Malaysia’s rich biodiversity, characterized by over 15,000 plant species and 700 bird species, faces critical threats such as deforestation and climate change. To combat these issues, it is essential to innovate how we educate future generations. Integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into biodiversity education can bridge the gap between theoretical learning and real-world applications. At Universiti Malaya’s Centre for Foundation Studies, students can engage with practical AI tools, like the Seek app and data analysis platforms, to explore biodiversity firsthand. As they progress to undergraduate studies, they can apply advanced AI techniques to analyze conservation data and collaborate with local communities. This approach not only fosters digital fluency but also empowers young researchers to develop local solutions. Ultimately, an education that blends technology with hands-on experiences can inspire and equip students to lead biodiversity conservation efforts effectively.
