Harvard Library is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to improve access to its extensive collections, as reported by The Harvard Crimson. Led by Stuart Snydman, the initiative focuses on developing tools that complement traditional research methods, ensuring scholarly rigor. A key feature is Collections Explorer, an AI-driven semantic search platform that allows users to conduct natural language queries to find special collection materials more easily. Initial tests with over 150 students have shown promise in reducing the time required to locate primary sources. Additionally, Harvard is integrating AI capabilities into chat platforms, allowing tools like ChatGPT to connect users with trusted academic sources, reaffirming the integrity of AI-assisted research. AI also aids in transcribing historical documents, enhancing accessibility.
