Healey deploys artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT across executive branch

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has officially launched OpenAI’s ChatGPT across the state’s executive branch, marking a historic first for government AI integration in the U.S. This initiative aims to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in public service by streamlining operations within the state’s 40,000-person workforce. The phased implementation will initially focus on the Executive Office of Technology Services and Security (TSS), where AI Assistant features will be tested. The program is designed to maintain data security, ensuring that employee interactions do not influence public AI models. Regular policy updates will be managed by the TSS Privacy Office. Subsequent rollouts are planned for additional agencies, with optional training sessions offered to staff for optimal tool usage. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman praised this collaboration, recognizing Massachusetts as a leader in leveraging AI to reduce administrative burdens and improve citizen services. This pioneering move sets a precedent for AI deployment in public sectors nationwide.
