Hong Kong has introduced its first locally developed artificial intelligence chatbot, HKChat, which has generated significant buzz by gaining approximately 90,000 users within a week of its soft launch. The chatbot specializes in providing essential information on local services, including real-time bus schedules and updates on weather, laws, and regulations. Achieving the top spot as the free app on Apple’s Hong Kong App Store, HKChat demonstrates the city’s commitment to becoming a technological hub. Guo, provost of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), emphasized the initiative’s ambition to deliver an effective AI assistant tailored for Hong Kong residents, indicating its potential as a world-first project. This development aligns with government efforts to reinvent Hong Kong’s tech landscape, enhancing its reputation in the global AI market. By focusing on localized services, HKChat aims to compete with established AI applications effectively.
