Hollywood studios and talent agencies are expressing significant concern over OpenAI’s Sora 2, an AI video generation app that rapidly exceeded 1 million downloads. The Creative Artists Agency labels the platform a “significant risk” to creators’ intellectual property rights. Major studios, including Disney, have opted out of having their copyrighted material featured, asserting they never authorized its use. Warner Bros. and Universal have also taken legal action against AI tools for copyright violations. The controversy revolves around Sora 2’s initial “opt-out” system, allowing users to generate videos with copyrighted characters without explicit consent from rights holders, leading to viral but risky content. In response, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced plans to enhance character control for rights holders and enforce stricter content guidelines. The app’s rating has suffered on the App Store amid user dissatisfaction with these changes, indicating potential legal and reputation challenges for OpenAI.
