AI is helping hackers automate and customize cyberattacks

Government-backed hackers are increasingly leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the speed and effectiveness of cyberattacks, according to CrowdStrike’s latest report. AI aids these actors in reconnaissance, assessing vulnerabilities, and crafting phishing campaigns, thereby automating various tasks. Notably, the Iran-linked group Charming Kitten reportedly employed AI in a 2024 phishing effort targeting U.S. and European entities. Similarly, the hacking group “Reconnaissance Spider” utilized AI for translating phishing messages, while North Korea’s “Famous Chollima” executed over 320 intrusions within a year by integrating AI tools throughout their operations. Organizations adopting AI must be cautious, as threat actors exploit vulnerabilities in AI tools, such as the incident involving Langflow’s AI development platform that enabled hackers to infiltrate networks and deploy malware. As the adoption of AI tools expands, so does the attack surface, raising the stakes for cybersecurity. Stay informed with the latest developments by subscribing to Cybersecurity Dive.
