Shengjia Zhao, co-creator of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, has been appointed as Meta’s new chief AI scientist amid internal shifts at the company. Reports suggest Zhao was offered the position after he considered returning to OpenAI, potentially complicating CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s ambitions for “personal superintelligence.” Meta confirmed Zhao’s role, acknowledging his leadership in the company’s superintelligence initiative. The restructuring also reflects Zuckerberg’s significant leadership changes, as he embraces newer executives like Zhao and former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang. However, this transition comes with challenges, as several newly hired AI staff, including researcher Rishabh Agarwal, have departed shortly after joining. Meta has also recently seen exits from long-time employees, sparking interest in the company’s AI strategy. Despite the turnover, Meta is focused on advancing its AI efforts, having invested heavily in talent from tech giants like Google and OpenAI.
