The generative AI boom has significantly impacted various industries, yet many models cater primarily to English speakers, leaving 1.5 billion speakers of Indic languages underserved. BharatGen, an initiative supported by India’s Department of Science and Technology and based at IIT Bombay, aims to bridge this gap by developing AI models for the 14 most popular Indic languages, with plans to extend beyond India’s 22 scheduled languages. Recently, BharatGen partnered with IBM to enhance AI adoption in India. This collaboration will leverage IBM’s expertise in AI training, governance, and the development of scalable AI solutions. The focus will be on industries such as education, agriculture, banking, healthcare, and citizen services, with a commitment to creating accessible AI tools. As BharatGen strives to ensure digital equity for all linguistic groups in India, this partnership represents a crucial step toward fostering inclusive AI innovation that meets the nation’s diverse needs.
