Researchers at the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT)-Allahabad are developing an innovative AI-based tool aimed at assisting visually impaired children in accessing visual content in textbooks. Funded by the UP Council of Science and Technology, this three-year project seeks to transform educational accessibility by converting text and images into audio, with detailed alt-text descriptions tailored for varying comprehension levels. Younger children will receive simplified explanations, while older students will benefit from more complex insights. Additionally, the AI tool is designed to answer students’ questions, fostering an interactive learning experience. Led by Assistant Professor Mohammad Javed, the team has completed alt-text generation and is now focused on creating audio files for the entire curriculum. This initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, emphasizing equitable education, particularly for foundational learning stages. With 2.2 billion people globally affected by visual impairment, this project is crucial for enhancing educational accessibility for affected students in Uttar Pradesh.
