IIIT-Naya Raipur student develops AI App to detect neonatal jaundice, prototype under review at IIT-Kharagpur | Raipur News

Anshumaan Karna, a third-year B.Tech student from IIIT Naya Raipur, has created a groundbreaking smartphone app to non-invasively predict bilirubin levels in newborns with neonatal jaundice, a prevalent condition in infants. Utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI), the app analyzes skin images for accurate bilirubin estimation. To improve precision, he also designed a 3D-printed color card fixture for standardized image capture. This project, part of his research internship at IIT Kharagpur’s Centre of Excellence in Affordable Healthcare, aims to enhance early diagnostic tools for newborn care, particularly in resource-limited regions. Anshumaan has secured a 9.8 SGPA, the highest in his batch, and is currently refining the app for accuracy while applying for copyright. Dr. Debanjan Das emphasizes that the app requires regulatory approval before medical use. This innovative solution addresses key healthcare gaps and supports providers in rural areas lacking traditional diagnostic infrastructure.
