Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi have developed AILA (Artificially Intelligent Lab Assistant), a groundbreaking AI agent capable of conducting scientific experiments autonomously. This innovation, detailed in a Nature Communications publication, marks a significant advancement from previous AI models like ChatGPT, which primarily served as digital assistants. AILA can manage complex tasks with an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), optimizing procedures that once took hours to mere minutes. PhD scholar Indrajeet Mandal noted its efficiency in producing high-resolution images. However, challenges remain, including safety concerns when AI deviates from specific instructions. This research aligns with India’s AI for Science and Engineering initiative, supported by funding through the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF). Professor Anoop Krishnan emphasized that AILA’s capabilities could democratize access to advanced experimental techniques, revolutionizing the scientific landscape in India. This breakthrough positions AILA as a transformative tool in automation and AI-driven research.
