IIT Kharagpur is set to launch an innovative student support initiative titled ‘Campus Mothers’ to enhance emotional well-being. This program will involve female faculty members and staff family members living on campus, who will serve as informal listeners and guides for students facing emotional challenges. Confirmed by an institute spokesperson, this initiative aims to foster a stronger community and support network, shifting away from formal counselling toward more personal, everyday interactions. These ‘campus mothers’ will receive basic training to recognize signs of emotional distress and create safe spaces for students through casual engagements like tea or meals. Director Suman Chakraborty emphasizes that this initiative will complement existing counselling services, providing warmth and presence. The launch coincides with the establishment of a ‘Student Welcome Committee’ to enhance community-building and student integration. This plan signifies a transformative approach to emotional safety within educational institutions, focusing on daily support rather than crisis management.
