Ilya Sutskever pushes back against Musk in OpenAI lawsuit

Ilya Sutskever, the former chief scientist and co-founder of OpenAI, has rebuffed Elon Musk’s accusations of contempt of court, labeling them as excessive and unfounded. In recent court filings, Sutskever defended his limited disclosures regarding his financial stake in OpenAI and highlighted the sensitive nature of an internal memo, which Musk’s team seeks to access. He criticized the court’s earlier discovery order as a violation of his financial privacy rights and prior agreements. This legal altercation stems from Musk’s lawsuit alleging OpenAI’s shift from nonprofit to for-profit undermines its original mission. Although U.S. Magistrate Judge Thomas Hixson dismissed Musk’s immediate contempt request, he ordered Sutskever to complete his deposition and provide the requested Brockman memo by November 5. As Sutskever leads his AI startup, Safe Superintelligence, valued at $32 billion, he emphasizes a cautious approach to developing advanced AI systems, diverging from OpenAI’s trajectory.
