Implementing a Comprehensive Lifecycle Framework for Effective Governance of Healthcare AI

A “true lifecycle approach” for governing healthcare AI

AI is revolutionizing healthcare delivery, from hospital wards to wellness apps. Groundbreaking initiatives like Cedars Sinai’s app and Siemens’ precision medicine tools exemplify this transformation. However, fragmented governance remains a challenge as legal frameworks lag behind technological advancements. Researchers at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) propose the “True Lifecycle Approach” (TLA), designed to ensure AI in healthcare is ethical and prioritizes patient trust.

Unlike current frameworks, which narrowly focus on device approval without fully addressing patient rights, the TLA emphasizes ethics throughout AI’s lifecycle—from research and development to practical application. Regulatory bodies like Saudi Arabia’s Food and Drug Authority are pioneering broader safety standards that include ethical dimensions.

The TLA’s comprehensive governance model is particularly relevant in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), where diverse populations necessitate culturally sensitive AI solutions. This approach could establish a global governance framework that reinforces patient-centered care in AI development and implementation.
