India is set to launch its own Large Language Model (LLM) by the end of 2025, as part of the government’s ambitious IndiaAI Mission aimed at achieving AI self-reliance. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) reports that twelve Indian companies are actively developing foundational models using 38,000 GPUs, available at a subsidized rate of ₹65 per hour, to foster local innovation and reduce reliance on foreign AI technologies. At the India Mobile Congress 2025, MeitY Secretary S Krishnan emphasized an “innovative and frugal” AI strategy to maximize benefits with limited resources, attracting interest from global organizations in scalable digital transformation models. Abhishek Singh, MeitY’s Additional Secretary, highlighted the mission’s focus on creating affordable infrastructure, national data platforms, and AI-skilling programs. This initiative is poised to enhance India’s AI capabilities while ensuring a level playing field for both public and private sectors.
