Abhishek Singh, the additional secretary at MeitY and CEO of the IndiaAI Mission, highlighted urgent concerns regarding India’s tech industry at the Bengaluru Tech Summit. He warned that without rapid upgrades in engineering talent focused on artificial intelligence (AI), India risks compromising its software services advantage. Singh emphasized that AI coding tools, developed by companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, challenge India’s traditional problem-solving skills that fueled its IT boom.
The IndiaAI Mission is actively addressing this skill gap through fellowships across various fields and the initiative ‘YUVA AI for ALL,’ which aims to educate youth on AI. Additionally, partnerships are forming to develop data labs in tier 2 cities to train future data scientists. Singh underscored the importance of upskilling for sustaining tech strength. He also mentioned progress on large language models, with Bengaluru-based Sarvam nearing a foundation model launch, supported by government-backed compute resources.
